Change Management is the process to prepare and execute your impactful change in production e.g. database schema change, infrastructure update, etc. People typically regard Change Management as a bureaucracy process to gather approvals before changing. However, the approval steps are not important actually.
The main purpose of Change Management is eliminating your “Optimism bias” i.e. human being tends to think nothing would be wrong by nature. When planning the next change, you might think the change is safe and no need to worry about anything. In reality, any change, even just one line of code change could break whole system. In the Change Management process, you should intentionally disagree with your internal optimism and carefully think about the worst case and how to mitigate that.
There are general best practices of Change Management e.g. how to organize the Change Management document, but the most effective practice is getting reviewed by third party. The third party reviewer don’t/shouldn’t have to have deep knowledge about your system so that they can read your document without the optimism bias since they don’t have implicit knowledge/experience around your system which your peers have, and hard to guess what would typically happen by such a change.
